Absalon defends his gold in men's mountain biking

BEIJING (AP) -- Julien Absalon of France has won his second straight Olympic gold medal in men's mountain biking, easily holding off countryman Jean Christophe Peraud for the title.
A four-time world champion, Absalon completed eight laps around the course in 1 hour, 55 minutes, 59 seconds to become the first man with two Olympic mountain biking titles.
Peraud finished 1:07 back of Absalon. Switzerland's Nino Schurter was third, finishing 1:53 behind Absalon and beating fellow Swiss racer Christoph Sauser - the 2000 Olympic bronze medalist - to the finish line by two seconds.
Americans Todd Wells and Adam Craig failed to finish the course.
Saturday's event was the final cycling competition of the Beijing Games.

Bargain Hunt
Are you buying a second-hand bike? Here's what to look for....
1- If you couldn't find a frame number anywhere, BEWARE - the bike may have been stolen
2- Look for crash damage. If the frame is bent, forget it. It'll be severely weakened. The most common damage area is just behind the head tube, on the top & down tubes. If the headset cups move in the frame, it may be evidence of a frontal impact.
3-Check the fork isn't bent. If the legs are pushed back from the steerer angel, the fork might caught up in accident. Turn the steering to see if there are loose and tight spots in the headset. If it locks or loosens, there has probably been impact damage. Make sure the fork compresses and rebound runs smoothly.
4-Line up the front and rear wheels by eye from the back. If the wheels aren't in line, the frame might been hit from the side. Also check if the wheels is center in the frame.
5-Inspect the rear mech gear hanger and dropouts for damage. Make sure that the hanger is in perfect condition. Is not easy to find replaceable hanger that fit the exact frame.
6- Spin the wheels. Minor sideways is easy to repair. But big ups and downs guys mean new wheels
7.Check everything that have bearing. Example hubs, bottom bracket, pedal & headset. They might just need services.
8-Inspect the brakes. Are they runs smoothly. Is the pads worn out? If its a disc brake, check the disc rotor make sure that the rotor is not damaged.
9-Look at the drivetrain. Make sure that chain doesn't seat snugly on the teeth, it'll need replacing.
10- Last but not least. Make sure you test ride the bike. Also make sure that you choose the right size.

Accesories
Here is some quick guide to the key items you'll need when you mountain biking
If you're a newcomer to 'REAL' mountain biking, then bear in mint that buying the bike is just the start of it. Yes its true if you just casually riding around your house area, wearing flip flop no helmet just fine. But when you start venture off-road here is when you consider what equipment you need to buy to get the best from your ride. Theory, you don't need those special kit for your (kedai mamak beli rokok and cillis for your wife ) rides. but if you start to involve in real mountain biking not wearing the proper gear can sometimes limit your enjoyment of riding. Here's a list that we think that you should have when you mountain biking
1: Helmet
~It won't tell when will you fall off. So get a decent helmet. You dont have to spend big bucks on it. Just make sure it fit u secure and snug and the adjustment straps allow you to prevent the helmet from shifting back and forth on your head. Expect around RM80 above. More money buy branded helmet and less weight also mo ventilation, but doesn't necessarily more portection.

2: Decent Shorts
~Well shorts or tights with padding can add more comfort to you ride. Making your ride comfort and more fun riding. Comes with many different type: baggy, tights, 3/4 etc. Expect to pay RM 80 above
3: A basic tool kit
~As you venture more than a walk from home, remember!!! always carry with you bike-friendly multi-tool, plus inner tube, a patch kit and pump. The day you don't take it is the day you break down. RM 50-80 is well money spend
4: Proper MTB Shoes
~Yes, you can ride in sneakers, but you''ll feel better in stiff soled MTB shoes - or sticky soled shoes if you prefer flat pedals. Special Clip-in (cleated) pedals and shoes will set you back at least RM 200, but you'll be amazed at how much more efficiently they enable you to pedal

5: Clothing
~Anything that can keep you off the sweat. Most of cycling clothing have pocket on the back where you can put inside your tubes, power bar (power stick) etc... price of cycling jersey start from RM 80 and above

6: Protective Clothing
~ You can spend some of you earned work hard bucks to protecting yourself like an American Football player (body amour) or you can just add gloves. Here you can expect from RM 50 above. Also there is knee pads, elbow pads etc
7: Water bottle or Hydration Rucksack
~As rides get longer, you'll need to drinks. A bottle in a cage on the bike will do the job. But in you do some epic ride, there is hydration bag pack, when you can fill up your water and also some kits like cellphone, tubes, energy bars, camera, tools price of this bag pack are around RM120 above
